6. ICTPH Pre - Clinic Launch Enrolment Process

   Preceding the launch of each of our RMHCs is the need for a structured Enrolment exercise, for the identification and tracking of the population served. This paper details the pre-launch Enrolment exercise, where local staff, recruited temporarily, distributed a unique household ID card to every household in the identified catchment and collected demographic information and the lat-long co-ordinates of the household using a smart phone running Android OS and a data-collection tool called ODK Collect.

    Selecting a health worker involves many steps. The profile of the health worker must be established, criteria must be framed, candidates identified and a final selection made. The paper is an attempt to assist interviewers to make careful selection of health workers with the support of structured tools such as the application form, written test paper, interview guide and interview form. While exploring the need to establish these tools, an EIGHT STEP process has been created providing a framework for careful and systematic selection.     This paper outlines the four phase (fifteen – day) training program, which was scheduled for the Guides within a week of their selection based on the ICTPH Eight step selection process. The overall objective of the training was to equip the Guides with the knowledge and skills to perform their day-to-day role in their respective hamlets. The training techniques incorporated principles of adult learning and adopted a problem solving approach to stimulate active participation from Guides to ensure that learning objectives of each phase were met, adding to the existing experiences and knowledge of the Guides.

17. ICTPH Nutrition Intervention - Phase I

    Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency, have a direct impact on the nutritional status of children and are the leading cause of anaemia in non-malarial regions. The Indian National Health and Family Survey-3 conducted in 2005-2006, found that anemia among children less than three years of age is extremely widespread. This study will evaluate the feasibility of combining social marketing with the activities of a local health centres and community health workers to promote the sale and use of Sprinkles micronutrient powder in rural Tamil Nadu and its effectiveness on reducing the levels of anaemia among children aged 6-24 months.

20. Mapping Rural Health Systems using GIS

    Poster presentation accepted at the Gephardt Institute of Public service for the poster on Faces of Hope. The objective of this mapping exercise is to look at current access within the ICTPH Health Systems Pilot at Karambayam. Two buffers (500m and 1000m) have been created around the health workers. 26. Oral Hygiene Proposal

    This study was conducted to understand the role that community health workers (CHWs) can play in diagnosing manifestations of impaired oral hygiene such as dental plaque, caries and gingivitis and validate their assessment through re-examination of the random sample by a certified dentist. The note discusses the background of oral healthcare in the developing world and establishes the importance of oral health and hygiene by citing research that reveals its links with other serious health conditions. The paper also explains the methodology adopted and the protocal followed for the study and includes details of the CHW training curriculum along with the schedule for training and the envisaged timeline of the Oral Hygiene Study.
