Electronic Health Records
One of the most common problems faced in the rural health scenario is the lack of documentation. Easy access to medical history is a critical input for a medical professional to assess a patient's current situation. Introduction of Electronic Health Record systems at the primary level thus becomes the next step, assisting in the development of an efficient health care delivery system. EHR refers to a collection of individual patients' medical records in digital formats. An EHR system drastically reduces the chances of human error, as well as reducing transaction costs in terms of ease of use and time saved.

Currently ICTPH is working with Swasth India to develop an in-house EHR which will conform to the HL7 and CCR health-care messaging standards, the ICD standard disease and procedure codes, HIPAA norms as well as IEEE standards. The system will closely follow the guidelines of the ISO 18308 for EHR architecture . The design is capable of communicating with a biometric smart card provided by FINO for authentication of patients and retrieval of patients' records. It will also have the ability to communicate with medical diagnostic devices connected to the computer. Kept in consideration while designing the system is the fact that the complete front end should be downloadable with minimal communication to the web, and it must be able to upload the patient record after an encounter.

The EHR is meant to facilitate better patient care in the future, while also providing a wealth of knowledge and data for research purposes, quality management, health service management, health financing and health education. The system developed will be deployed at Sugha Vazhvu (Tanjore) and all successive ventures.
